ABOUT QUITO, ECUADOR

Shelter of the first Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Quito, which by far is one of the most popular destinations for tourists or those who decide to go on a student exchange program, is surprising.

Located exactly in half the world, the capital of Ecuador is very safe, and its nightlife is like those of São Paulo and Buenos Aires. A historical narrow street exclusive for pedestrians enchants to all. Charming, it has bars, coffee shops and art galleries in a more colonial style.

Quito is also a region that is very concerned with the needy population. The city has several social actions that encourage the community to lead a healthier life. Most of the time, care for the health, cleanliness and well-being of these people is done by volunteers.

PROJECT DETAILS

The Medicine Abroad program is dedicated to pre-medical, nursing, and medical students, as well as physicians who wish to live one of the most amazing experiences one can undertake. Get out of the classroom and turn your theoretical knowledge into practical experience. Build strong soft skills and overcome cultural differences while finding yourself and growing into the person you are meant to be. Empower your life and share your passion for people with your colleagues. Take care of local communities and make a difference in people’s lives.

You will spend the majority of your time learning as an assistant for the main doctor. Work responsibilities vary with your education, skill, experience and medical background. Interns not only learn skills that will come in handy in medical school (injections + sutures, weight, height), you also learn how to stay calm and steady in the face of an emergency, following a Doctor or Nurse for a day. You can learn the basic procedure with doctor-patient relations. The most rewarding experience is working firsthand with nurses and patients. This internship shows you that it is not just know-how that makes a good doctor, but also a certain degree of people skills and patience. Health Interns will work alongside Ecuadorian  medical staff in Medical centers located in poor areas, where you receive basic medical training and have the opportunity to see the real Ecuadorian medical system to learn first-hand about a healthcare system that is under budgeted and without equipment.
